#PFF17 • Cast off

Per quest’edizione, Birdmen è media-partner del Pentedattilo Film Festival, il festival internazionale di cortometraggi che si svolge a Pentedattilo (Reggio Calabria) dal 7 all’11 dicembre. Ecco le nostre recensioni in anteprima. La Redazione, inoltre assegnerà il Premio speciale Birdmen al miglior cortometraggio d’animazione e al miglior cortometraggio live action.

Cast off  (2016), Larguer les Ammares in originale, prodotto dalla Colonelle Films e diretto dalla talentuosa Sandrine Brodeur-Desrosiers – per lei anche un tirocinio presso Denis Villeneuve durante la realizzazione di La donna che canta (2010) –, offre in circa venti minuti l’affascinante e malinconica storia di una vita letteralmente ai confini del mondo.

La storia si sviluppa come un racconto in flashback del protagonista, Simon (Kelly Provencher), un adolescente che vive nella fedda e rocciosa Île Verte, isolotto al largo della costa del Québec, Canada (in realtà disabitata). Lui e la sorellina sono gli unici giovani di una comunità formata da circa una ventina di persone, per lo più anziani, totalmente isolata dalla terraferma. Per andare a scuola o fare la spesa bisogna dunque affidarsi all’unica barca disponibile, quella del papà di Simon (Marc Fournier). Una vita che evidentemente non piace molto a Simon, che si sente tagliato fuori dal mondo e dai suoi coetanei. Il ritrovamento sulla spiaggia di una misteriosa barchetta di legno e i tentativi di ripararla lo porteranno a una piccola grande scelta (tenerla o resitituirla al mare?) e forse ad un atto di ribellione che potrà cambiare la sua vita e quella della sua famiglia.

Il prologo tradisce l’influenza del documentario, genere nel quale la regista si è cimentata agli inizi della sua carriera, mentre il tono poetico rende l’avventura di Simon quasi una fiaba moderna. Si tratta in definitiva di un piccolo racconto di formazione che procede in modo semplice e lineare, sospeso tra la necessità di restare legati alle proprie radici e la volontà di salpare (cast off, per l’appunto) alla scoperta di nuove possibilità, e quindi di crescere. Il mare, silenzioso antagonista, erode lentamente l’isola, agendo però anche sull’anima del giovane protagonista, sempre più sospinta verso un irrefrenabile desiderio di libertà. Non manca però anche un tocco onirico al termine della scena della visita al collegio, un improvviso momento surreale che forse non sarebbe dispiaciuto al Christopher Nolan di Inception. Passato anche dal Toronto Film Festival, Cast off approda ora al Pentedattilo Film Festival spiccando come uno delle opere più interessanti in concorso.

Cast off (Larguer les Ammares, 2016), produced by Colonelle Films and directed by the talented Sandrine Brodeur-Desrosiers – who had an internship with Denis Villeneuve during the production of Incendies (2010) – presents in about twenty minutes the fascinating and melancholic story of a life literally at the end of the world.

The story unfolds as a flashback of the protagonist, Simon (Kelly Provencher), a teenage boy who lives in the cold and rocky Île Verte, an island off the coast of Québec, Canada (which in reality is disabitata). He and his little sister are the only young in a community of about twenty members, mainly elderly people, completely isolated from the mainland. The only way to go to school or is using the boat of Simon’s father (Marc Fournier). Such life evidently does not fit to Simon, who feels cut off from the world and from his peers. The discovery of a mysterious little wooden boat on the beach and the attempts to repair it will lead him to a great little choice, and maybe to an act of rebellion which may change his life and that of his family.

The prologue betrays the director’s beginnings in documentary, while the film’s poetic tone makes Simon’s adventure akin to a modern fairy-tale. It is a little tale of enlightment that develops in a simple and linear way, hoovering between the necessity to remain connected with the past and the willingness to cast off, and so to grow up. Like a silent antagonist, the sea slowly erodes the island and the young protagonist’s soul, increasingly driven by an overwhelming desire for freedom. There is also a nice oniric touch at the end of the scene of Simon’s visit to the boarding school, a sudden surreal moment which seems borrowed from Christopher Nolan’s Inception. Presented also at the Toronto Film Festival, Cast off now arrives at Pentedattilo Film Festival, where it stands out as one of the most interesting works in competition.
