#PFF17 • And the Moon stands still

Per quest’edizione, Birdmen è media-partner del Pentedattilo film Festival, il festival internazionale di cortometraggi che si svolge a Pentedattilo (Reggio Calabria) dal 7 all’11 dicembre. And the Moon stands still, corto d’animazione diretto da Yulia Ruditskaya, trae spunto per la sua storia dal folklore est-europeo, in particolare dalla fiaba di Aleksey Tolstoy The Witcher (termine che non trova un corrispettivo in italiano). L’autrice elabora però una sua rilettura personale dell’opera, trasformandola in un prodotto del tutto originale.

La fiaba, in maniera fortemente metaforica, ha come protagoniste la Luna e l’importanza della sua luce, ma indaga anche il ciclo della distruzione e della ricostruzione in ogni cosa; il punto di rottura cruciale è proprio la distruzione della Luna da parte di un demone capriccioso, il quale causa un’inondazione che devasta un villaggio. Il corto della Ruditskaya si prende una consistente dose di libertà rispetto all’opera da cui è tratto, soprattutto attribuendo un ruolo centrale al personaggio dell’ubriaco. Se nella fiaba di Tolstoy egli viene a malapena citato, nell’adattamento animato diviene fondamentale, poiché, forse a causa del suo stato di ebrezza, è l’unico che riesce a vedere il demone, ed è tramite il suo punto di vista che seguiamo la storia. La vicenda ha una narrazione lineare e piuttosto semplice ed è totalmente priva di dialoghi, i quali sarebbero superflui per una storia che si racconta perfettamente grazie alle sole immagini. Anche se a volte bisogna sforzare la propria fantasia per comprendere ed accettare le soluzioni narrative, il risultato è quindi senza dubbio stimolante.

La storia si svolge totalmente di notte e i colori utilizzati dagli autori sono per lo più il bianco, il nero e la scala di grigi; solo la luce delle stelle e della Luna è colorata di un giallo intenso. Questa scelta cromatica attribuisce al corto un’atmosfera fortemente dark e cupa, una caratteristica inconsueta per una fiaba. Un tratto molto sbozzato, vibrante e movimentato, contribuisce inoltre a un’ottima resa dell’atmosfera d’inquietudine.

Non del tutto perfetto è invece l’utilizzo della colonna sonora. I temi composti sono ben scritti e in linea con l’atmosfera, ma a volte peccano nell’essere troppo invadenti. In alcune scene, infatti, sarebbe stato meglio far parlare di più la narrazione e far cessare la musica, data la grande eloquenza delle immagini.

In conclusione, questo è un corto animato che certamente dà prova dell’esperienza dell’autrice nel campo. La sua estetica molto personale, unita ad una rilettura originale del folklore, permettono a Yulia Ruditskaya di superare agevolmente quelli che sono i difetti e le imperfezioni della sua opera. And the Moon stands still può vantare un’ossatura solida e l’importante firma di una regista davvero talentuosa, firma che aspettiamo di poter rivedere su progetti ancora più grandi e ambiziosi.

And the Moon stands still, an animation short directed by Yulia Ruditskaya, traces the starting point of its story back to the east-european folklore, but in particular from the fairy tail written by Aleksey Tolstoy The Witcher. The author develops her personal reinterpretation of the work, transforming it in a completly original product.

It can be possible to take into account the fairy tail in a strong metaphorical way. The main character is the Moon and the importance of its light, but also the cicle of destruction and reconstruction of everything; the crucial breaking point is in fact te destruction of the Moon by a fickle demon, who causes a flood that devastates a village. The short by Ruditskaya takes significant liberties about the content if we compare it with the original work which inspired it; in fact one of the central roles is given to the drunken one. If in the original fairy tail the drunk man is barely mentioned, in the animated adaptation becomes the point of focus in order to the fact that he’s the only one able to see the demon and it’s from his point of view that we can follow the story.  The plot has a linear narration and rather simple and the short has no dialogues, which would be unnecessary in a story that perfectly tells itself with just the images. So, Even if sometimes it is necessary to strain our fantasy in order to understand and accept the narrative solutions, the result can be considered most definitely stimulating.

Furthermore the storyline totally takes place at night and the main colours used are mostly white, black and grayscale; only the light of the stars and the Moon is defined by an intense yellow. This chromatic choice gives to the short an highly dark and gloomy atmosphere, a peculiar feature that characterizes a fairy tail. On the other side, the drawing technique used leaves some elements just sketched. Nevertheless the first one becomes vibrant even because of the will of the author of underlining the idea of growing anxiety.

Not entirely perfect is the use of the soundtrack.  The themes composed are well written and in line with the atmosphere, but sometimes they seem to be too much invasive. In many scenes, in facts, it would have been better to let talk the story and to slow down the music, considering the great eloquence of the images.

In conclusion, this animated short surely shows the experience of the author on this field. Even though it has few imperfections, Yulia Ruditskaya is able to overshadow and exceed them by the use of her personal and interesting aesthetics.  And the Moon stands still can boast a strong framework and the important signature of a really talented director, signature we look forward to see again on even more greater and ambitious projects.
