#PFF17 • H0_pe 02

Per quest’edizione, Birdmen è media-partner del Pentedattilo film Festival, il festival internazionale di cortometraggi che si svolge a Pentedattilo (Reggio Calabria) dal 7 all’11 dicembre. Ecco le nostre recensioni in anteprima. La Redazione, inoltre, assegnerà il Premio speciale Birdmen al miglior cortometraggio d’animazione e al miglior cortometraggio live action.

Chi ha familiarità con il mondo della fantascienza, ma anche chi (come il sottoscritto) non è un grande appassionato del genere, ma ha visto Io, robot (A. Proyas, 2009), sarà abituato allo stereotipo dei robot che non possono provare sentimenti in quanto macchine. In H0_pe 02, corto d’animazione realizzato con pupazzi e tecnologia 3D da Antonio Genovese e Francesco Bruno Sorrentino, questo luogo comune cinematografico viene sovvertito con abilità e naturalezza.

In una galassia in cui su ogni pianeta vive un solo abitante e controllata da un avveniristico quartier generale che ricorda le costruzioni di Tron: Legacy (J. Kosinski, 2010), un piccolo automa cerca l’amore, così da riempire la solitudine della sua esistenza. Purtroppo le leggi vigenti, dettate verosimilmente dal quartier generale, sono chiare: non più di un abitante per ogni pianeta. È questa la storia raccontata in  H0_pe 02. Una trama semplice, dipanata nel modo più elementare possibile, senza salti temporali né  flashback, in perfetta sintonia con il nostro protagonista perfetta sintonia con il nostro protagonista. Anche lui infatti non presenta particolari sfumature e tutti i suoi gesti sono elementari. Mancano  azioni di forza o di resistenza eroiche, ma forse è proprio per questo che lo spettatore riesce ad entrare in sintonia, anche emotiva, con quello che vede.

Nel tentativo di soddisfare il suo forte desiderio, spinto dai suoi sentimenti, il piccolo robot è messo di fronte ad un divieto perentorio. Questo fa sì che egli si interroghi sul perché e su quali sono le cause che generano questa regola. Ammonito dai suoi vicini circa l’illegalità di quello che sta facendo, il nostro automa non demorde e si interroga, fino a riuscire ad innestare il seme  del dubbio. Pare significativo, almeno a parere di chi scrive, che le cause che stanno dietro al divieto imposto dal quartier generale non vengano mai svelate, probabilmente perché, in realtà, non ci sono. Possiamo ipotizzare che uno dei fini ultimi di questo cortometraggio sia proprio il voler far riflettere sull’importanza della chiarezza e spingerci, in modo leggero e fiabesco, ad una riflessione sulla necessità di ricerca delle cause in luogo di un’imposizione dettata dall’alto.

Non va dimenticata, inoltre, la totale mancanza di dialogo, probabile indizio della solitudine in cui ogni abitante della galassia è costretto, ma anche di una comunicazione farraginosa, fatta di brevi messaggi scritti, che mira ad essere sintetica e fumosa. Al posto del suono della voce, è quindi la musica composta da Mario Autore e Andrea Albanese a scandire, in maniera armoniosa, le immagini. Con una funzione simile a quella che ha nei videogiochi o nelle grafic novel, la componente musicale sottolinea in maniera cristallina ma discreta le azioni dei personaggi e i turning point, amplificando la capacità del corto di farci emozionare, riflettere, ma allo stesso tempo anche sorridere.

Those who are familiar with science fiction, but also who (like myself) are not such a big fan of the genre but has seen I, robot  (A. Proyas, 2009), is used to stereotyped robots that unable to feel emotions because of their nature of machines. In H0_pe 02, short animated movie made with puppets and 3D technology by Antonio Genovese and Francesco Bruno Sorrentino, such common place is subverted with skill and naturalness.

In a galaxy where on every planet lives only one inhabitant and everything is controlled by a futuristic headquarters that remembers Tron’s: Legacy buildings (J. Kosinski, 2010), a small robot seeks love to fill the solitude of his existence. Unfortunately, the laws in force, dictated by the headquarters, are clear: no more than one inhabitant per planet. This is the story told in H0_pe 02. A simple plot, disentangled in the simplest possible way, without time-jumps or flashbacks, in perfect harmony with our protagonist. In fact, he has no shades and all his gestures are elementary. There are no actions of heroic strength or resistance, but perhaps that is why the spectator manages to get tuned, even emotionally, with what he sees.

In an attempt to satisfy his strong desire, driven by his feelings, the little robot is put in front of a peremptory prohibition. This causes him to wonder on the causes that created this rule. Admonished by his neighbours about the illegality of what he’s doing, our automaton does not give up on his quest and question himself until he’s able to grasp the seed of doubt. Is significant, at least in the opinion of the writer, that the causes behind the ban imposed by the headquarters are never revealed, probably because they are not. We may hypothesize that one of the purposes of this short film is to think on the importance of clarity and to push us, in a lightly and fairly way, into a reflection on the need to search for causes instead of a dictated dictation.

What is remarkable moreover, is the total lack of dialogue, a clue of the loneliness in which every galaxy is forced, but also of a cumbersome communication, made of short written messages, aimed at being synthetic and smoky. Instead of the sound of voice, it is the music composed by Mario Autore and Andrea Albanese to sketch, in a harmonious way, the images. Like in video games or in the graphic novel, the musical component emphasizes the actions of the characters and the turning points in a crystallin but discreet way, amplifying the ability of the short to make us excite, reflect, but at the same time even smile.
