Per quest’edizione, Birdmen è media-partner del Pentedattilo film Festival, il festival internazionale di cortometraggi che si svolge a Pentedattilo (Reggio Calabria) dal 7 all’11 dicembre. Ecco le nostre recensioni in anteprima. La Redazione, inoltre, assegnerà il Premio speciale Birdmen al miglior cortometraggio d’animazione e al miglior cortometraggio live action.

Lo scalcinato club di calcio di un piccolo villaggio bavarese acquista un nuovo giocatore dal Ghana: Austin, un ragazzo dal grande talento. Oertel, l’allenatore della squadra, ha una visione del calcio ricca di ideali e non sottomessa ai soldi come oggi. All’inizio non vede di buon occhio il nuovo acquisto fatto dal presidente della società, ma col passare del tempo capirà che lui e Austin hanno molte cose in comune.
Different Bayern si differenzia da molti altri cortometraggi grazie alla sua spontaneità, soprattutto nel modo in cui riesce a parlare di temi come l’immigrazione e il calcio moderno con una comicità leggera, ma mai scontata o superficiale.
Il regista Matthias Koßmehl riflette nelle sue inquadrature precise tutti i suoi studi, i colori sono sempre azzeccati e immergono lo spettatore negli ambienti bavaresi, diventando specchio dello stato d’animo dei personaggi. Si nota molto anche lo studio della formazione dei quadri d’insieme che hanno un tocco simile al cinema di Wes Anderson, colorato e ironicamente inverosimile.
Il corto sfrutta una vena comica per alleggerire momenti più drammatici e riuscire a trasmettere in modo diretto i temi che si nascondono dietro lo snodo narrativo. Tutto questo viene amplificato e perfezionato dalle capacità recitative di Johann Schüler (Oertel) e Ashley Biam (Austin), che riescono a dare la giusta intensità in ogni scena facendoci ridere ed emozionare.
Specialmente Oertel che è un personaggio dall’aria nostalgica, ma che ha ancora un cuore ardente per il calcio e in particolare per la squadra del Gretzing, ha solo bisogno di uno slancio vitale in questo suo periodo di rassegnazione. Austin invece è un ragazzo che ha cuore e talento per questo sport, il punto d’incontro tra loro due è proprio questo: la passione e il trovarsi nella stessa situazione di solitudine, rappresentata dal piccolo villaggio sperduto tra le lande bavaresi.
Perciò l’unica cosa che si può dire per questo cortometraggio è peccato. Peccato che duri solo 25 minuti e non sia un film vero e proprio, perché sarebbe riuscito ad esprimere in modo più completo una storia che già di suo cattura lo spettatore.

The shabby football club in a small Bavarian village buys a new player from Ghana: Austin, a very talented guy. Oertel, the team’s coach, has a vision of football full of ideals and not submitted to money. At the beginning he doesn’t like the new purchase made by the company’s president, but over time he will understand that he and Austin have many things in common.
Different Bayern differs from many other short films thanks to his spontaneity, above all in the way he manages to talk about issues such as immigration and modern football with a light comedy, but never obvious or shallow.
The director Matthias Koßmehl reflects in his precise shots all his studies, the colors are always spot on and plunge the viewer in the Bavarian environment, becoming a mirror of the characters’ mood. We can also note the formation study of crowd shots that have a similar touch to Wes Anderson’s cinema, colorful and ironically far-fetched.
The short uses a comic vein to lighten more dramatic moments and be able to express directly themes hidden behind the narrative knot. All this is amplified and refined by the acting skills of Johann Schüler (Oertel) and Ashley Biam (Austin), who manage to give in every scene the right intensity, making us laugh and excite.
Above all Oertel, a nostalgic character who still has a burning heart for football and for the Gretzing team, he only needs a strong impulse during this period of resignation. Austin is a boy who has a heart and talent for this sport, the meeting point between them is just that: the passion and being in the same situation of loneliness, represented by the small village lost in the Bavarian lands.
Therefore, the only thing that can be said for this short film is “what a pity”. It’s a pity that it lasts only 25 minutes and is not a film, because it would be great, and it would have managed to express better a story that is really catching.
