The golden leaves of autumn and the lyrycal underwater shootings frame Silvia in the waves (2017), a short  film directed by debuting Mexican author Giovana Olmos and premiered during the last International Festival of Film Indépendant de Bordeaux -, which is surprising considered she is only 22. In 13 minutes, this queer-themed microfilm analyzes the emotional dynamic related to the mourning process for the death of Jean, beloved husband and brother of Mirelle and Noa, or rather for that Silvia, Jean’s true soul which has been chocked for too long and now is ready to literally to come to light, after the realisation of her sexuality. The concrete reason that has led Jean/Silvia to the extreme act are undefined, but can be traced back in the predominance of her psychic dimension over the physical one, together with the inability to be understood and accepted. The attention is focused on the impact of Jean’s choices on loved ones, avoiding a rhetorical approach. The undertaker’s simple request of delivering the deceased’s clothes for the burial rises some important questions: is there a right way to remember him/her? Which is the fairest choice?

The short film has an essential but dynamic script capable of conveying the opposite points of view of mother and son throught looks, dialogues, silences, combined with a technical work of remarkable quality that despite a quite low production budget, reveals a masterful use of the camera and a fine aesthetic taste, reflected in a naturalistic sound effect, in careful shots and harmonious chromatic choices which are perfect to highlight the fleeting beauty of autumn; moreover the dreamy atmospheres represents the bond between death and rebirth, and the lake turns from death-bed to a mother’s womb ready to welcome a new life.

The strong point of this short film is undoubtedly revealed in the protagonists’ interpretation, perfectly absorbed in their roles and masterly directed, with an emotional depth which conveys the exact feelings that are felt by them, such as pain, rancor and serenity. Ultimately, Silvia in the waves is a significantly mature work approaches gender issues in a credible way, also raising the value of the intimate freedom to be themselves beyond any social prejudice and law.
