#PFF17 • Twice upon a time
Per quest’edizione, Birdmen è media-partner del Pentedattilo film Festival, il festival internazionale di cortometraggi che si svolge a Pentedattilo (Reggio Calabria) dal 7 all’11 dicembre. Ecco le nostre recensioni in anteprima. La Redazione, inoltre, assegnerà il Premio speciale Birdmen al miglior cortometraggio d’animazione e al miglior cortometraggio live action.

C’erano due volte due re, due regni, due eserciti e due antitetici modi di agire, o forse no, Vojin Vasovic, col suo corto d’animazione, ci narra una storia ben diversa.
Il dualismo che caratterizza la personalità di ciascuno è il tema centrale di questa splendida fiaba. Quindi c’era una volta soltanto un re, ma diviso in due, a simboleggiare la complessità dell’Io, colto nei dissidi fra pulsioni e desideri contraddittori. Come la carta del re di cuori, di cui il corto narra la mitica origine, lo schermo è attraversato da una sottile linea che divide i mondi antitetici delle due personalità del buffo sovrano. Due aree cromatiche contrastanti: una rossa per l’anima raffinata e poetica, da despota illuminato del ‘700; una blu per la mentalità guerriera da conquistatore medievale, visualmente semplificano le dinamiche del “regio” conflitto interiore. Il calore della voce narrante smorza la dimensione drammatica del contrasto, attraverso un tessuto fonico di rime e assonanze giocose, cucito sulle immagini a colori brillanti, dai contorni netti, dalle linee infantili ed estremamente piacevoli da guardare.
L’autodistruzione, vista come via di fuga dalla difficoltà del non accettarsi così come si è, è l’altro tema denso e complesso che viene sapientemente affrontato con umorismo e delicatezza. Non c’è un nemico da combattere e annientare, bensì un singolo soggetto che, nel confronto con se stesso, si logora e consuma fino a giungere ad un insolito acme di tensione. Lo spannung si ha in un lieto fine originale ed inaspettato che veicola in sé un messaggio di armonia e auto-accettazione nei confronti di ogni componente della proprio personalità. Infine l’ingenuità ed il candore bambinesco con cui si vengono affrontati i conflitti psicologici non lasciano spazio a moralistica pedanteria e querulo didascalismo, bensì colpiscono maggiormente lo spettatore, spiazzato proprio dall’efficacia della semplificazione visiva di un tema ostico, senza scadere nella banalità. Vasovic, pertanto, produce un’opera di pregio, dal contenuto pregante racchiuso in una formula giocosa che invoglia guardare una seconda volta il suo Twice upon a time.

Twice upon a time there were two kings, two kingdoms, two armies, and two antithetical behavior, or maybe not, Vojin Vasovic, with his animation short, tells us a different story.
The dualism that characterizes each personality is the central theme of this wonderful fairy tale. So once upon a time there was just one king, but split in two, to symbolize the complexity of the Self, caught in the conflict between contradictory instincts and desires. Like the card of the King of Hearts, whose this short film claims to tell the mythical origin, the screen is crossed by a thin line, dividing the antithetical worlds of the funny king’s two personalities. Two contrasting chromatic areas: a red one for the refined and poetic soul, typical of an illuminated despot of the ‘700; a blue one for the medieval warrior’s mentality, visually simplify the dynamics of the His majesty’s inner conflict. The warmth of the narrative voice dulls the dramatic contrast, through a soundtrack of rhymes and playful assonances, sewn on brilliant color images, with infantile lines extremely pleasant to watch.
Self-destruction, viewed as a way of escape from the difficulty of not accepting us just as we are, is the other dense and complex theme that is cleverly dealt with humor and delicacy. There is no enemy to fight and annihilate, but a single subject who, in comparison with himself, is worn out and consumed until, reaching an unusual acme of tension. The spannung is an unexpected happy ending that carries in itself a message of harmony and self-acceptance towards every component of our own personality.
The greeness and the childish candor used to face psychological conflicts does not alllow moralisms and querulous didacticism, but rather affect the spectator, spared by the effectiveness of the visual simplification of a difficult theme without falling into banality. Vasovic, therefore, produces a work of prestige, with a deep message presented in a playful formula that prays to look at his Twice Upon a Time for a second time.
