Per quest’edizione, Birdmen è media-partner del Pentedattilo film Festival, il festival internazionale di cortometraggi che si svolge a Pentedattilo (Reggio Calabria) dal 7 all’11 dicembre. Ecco le nostre recensioni in anteprima. La Redazione, inoltre, assegnerà il Premio speciale Birdmen al miglior cortometraggio d’animazione e al miglior cortometraggio live action.

Signature (2017), il cortometraggio di Kei Chikaura, è un’istantanea di un problema sociale che investe molti giovani asiatici, realizzata con grande cura ed intensità.
La vicenda segue i passi di un giovane immigrato cinese nell’affollatissima Shibuya, uno dei quartieri più dinamici di Tokyo, mentre egli si concentra nel memorizzare una serie di frasi. Si scoprirà successivamente che le parole che sta ripetendo ossessivamente sono l’unica speranza che ha per costruirsi un futuro. Come spiegato da Chikaura, il corto intende porre l’attenzione su un noto programma di formazione professionale e avviamento al lavoro che lo stato giapponese aveva organizzato per tutelare i Paesi asiatici in via di sviluppo. Tuttavia, attualmente molte compagnie stanno sfruttando questo programma al solo scopo di assumere giovani lavoratori stranieri con un bassissimo stipendio.
La sceneggiatura è divisa in due blocchi che paiono essere molto separati: per metà del corto l’ambientazione è quella, appunto, di Shibuya, mentre nella seconda parte la vicenda si sposta in un ufficio. Pur essendo due mondi distanti per caratteristiche, il filo conduttore può essere identificato nel protagonista e, in particolare, nella solitudine che lo contraddistingue. Nella densa vitalità della capitale giapponese, questo sentimento emerge in maniera evidente e crea un contrasto affascinante. Il ragazzo cinese è infatti emarginato dal contesto linguistico e sociale ed è anche isolato mentalmente per la necessità di concentrarsi sulla memorizzazione. Questo è anche il sentimento che ci accompagna nell’ufficio, di fronte alle persone che devono decidere del futuro del protagonista, pur essendo una sequenza narrativa molto silenziosa e statica rispetto alla precedente nell’affollamento nipponico. Kei Chikaura riesce così a dare una linea narrativa emotiva che prende per mano lo spettatore in maniera comunicativa.
La regia dà prova di saper gestire un’ambientazione tutt’altro che semplice. Le scene nel quartiere giapponese sono sempre pulite e ordinate e riescono a catalizzare l’attenzione dello spettatore sul soggetto, nonostante la grande mole di comparse e d’immagini. Così come a Shibuya, nell’ufficio, l’occhio della regia riesce a cogliere le sfumature emotive del protagonista, grazie anche alla prova recitativa solida e molto convincente del suo interprete.
Signature è un prodotto pienamente promosso e si dimostra quindi in grado di convincere in ogni dimensione, permettendo a Kei Chikaura di lasciare il segno sia sul piano narrativo sia su quello registico.

Signature (2017) is a shortmovie directed by Ken Chikaura that offers a snap-shot on a social problem about many young asians, realized with care and intensity.
The set follows the steps of a young chinese migrant who find himself in the crowded Shibuya, one of Tokyo’s most dynamic area, while he is focusing the attention on memorizing a sequence of sentences.
At a certain point it will turn out that the words he’s repeating obsessively are the only hope he owns to build up his future. As explained by Chikaura, the short wants to narrow the focus on a well-known training and introduction program of work that the Japanese country has been organizing to protect the develop of the asian countries. However, now many companies are using this program for the sole purpose to hire young workers under very low wages.
The screenplay is divided between two blocks that seem to be clearly separated: for the first half of the short the location is, indeed, the one of Shibuya, while for the second one the set takes place in a office. Even though those two worlds are far away from each others by charateristics, the common thread can be identified in the protagonist and in particular in the loneliness that distinguishes him; in order to this there’s a strong difference between the sense of vitality of the Japanese capital city and the feeling of the protagonist that arises in a clear way and creates a charming contrast. The chinese guy is in fact an outsider for the linguistic and social context and he’s mentally isolated by his need to focus on memorization. This is the feeling that leads us in the office where are people who have to decide about the future of the main character, and it is possible to feel a particular static and quite narrative sequence comparated to the previous in the japanese overcrowding. By this way Kei Chikaura manages to give an emotional narrative line that holds the hand of the audience in a communicative way.
Nevertheless the uneasy location, The direction shows the ability to handle the set on.
The scenes in the Japanese district are always clean and orderly and are able to catalyse the focus of the spectator on the subject, even though the great amount of extras and images. As in Shibuya, also in the office the eye of the direction is able to seize the feelings of the protagonist, even due to the strong and convincing performance of his actor.
Signature is a fully promoted product and shows its ability to convince in every kind of dimension, allowing Kei Chikaura to let his mark both on the narrative and directional level.
