The Parrot (الببغاء in orginale, 2016), cortometraggio che non è passato inosservato nemmeno dalle parti di Cannes 2016, è la geniale produzione giordana che porta le firme di Darin J. Sallam e Amjad Al-Rasheed alla regia, i quali scrivono anche la sceneggiatura in compagnia di Rifqi Assaf.
La vicenda è ambientata a Haifa, in Palestina, nel 1948: una famiglia di ebrei sefarditi orientali appena arrivata dalla Tunisia in seguito alla proclamazione dello Stato d’Israele prova ad ambientarsi nella nuova realtà e nella nuova abitazione, occupata a seguito della fuga dei precedenti inquilini arabi, di religione cristiana. La casa, però, non è del tutto disabitata: oltre all’arredamento e ai diversi effetti personali, infatti, i proprietari hanno lasciato anche un meraviglioso pappagallo, che però, oltre ad essere un gran chiacchierone, risulta anche sproloquiare in maniera piuttosto volgare. Il capofamiglia, Mousa, vorrebbe liberarsene, ma sua moglie Rachel lo invita ad essere paziente con l’animale, che sembra essere l’unico amico della loro figlia Aziza, la quale deve ancora ambientarsi del tutto. Poco tempo dopo Mousa decide di invitare a cena i suoi influenti vicini, ebrei ashkenaziti, per tentare di ottenere un lavoro al più presto. La cena però, complice la forte differenza sociale delle due famiglie e, soprattutto, l’atteggiamento del pappagallo, sarà un completo disastro.
Grande produzione che cura tutto al dettaglio, The Parrot si impone allo spettatore sotto tutti i punti di vista: uso della prospettiva simmetrica pressoché onnipresente e perfetta, fotografia efficace, montaggio serrato, allestimento curato, attori impeccabili (una nota di merito alla piccola ma già bravissima Yasmine Ben Amara, nel ruolo di Aziza), sceneggiatura brillante. Affascinante in particolar modo il tono con cui viene affrontata la vicenda, più che delicata, attraverso un uso dello humour velato da una nota di malinconia, che viene in aiuto allo spettatore internazionale nel difficile compito di calarsi nelle vite dei personaggi. Godibilissimo e piacevolmente efficace.

The Parrot (الببغاء ,2016), a short film that was noticed even in Cannes 2016, is a brilliant Jordanian production that bears the signatures of Darin J. Sallam and Amjad Al-Rasheed as directors; they also wrote the screenplay with Rifqi Assaf.
The story is set in Haifa, Palestine, in 1948: a family of Eastern Sephardic Jews just arrived from Tunisia after the proclamation of the State of Israel tries to settle in the new habitat, starting with a new home, occupied after the escape of previous Arab tenants, of Christian religion. The house, however, is not completely uninhabited: in addition to the furniture and the different personal effects, in fact, the owners have also left a wonderful parrot, which is a great talker and usually rants in a rather scurrilous way. The head of the family, Mousa, would like to get rid of it, but his wife Rachel invites him to be patient with the parrot, that seems to be the only friend of their daughter Aziza, who has yet to completely settle down. Shortly thereafter Mousa decides to invite an important Ashkenazi family, who are neighbors, to have a dinner in their house; he thinks it could be a good chance to get a job soon. The dinner, however, thanks to the strong social difference between the two families and, above all, the attitude of the parrot, will be a complete disaster.
The Parrot is a big production that takes care of all the details, imposing itself to the viewer in all respects: a perfect use of the symmetrical perspective (almost all the frames), an effective photography, a tight editing, an accurate set-up, impeccable actors (a note of merit to the young and already very good Yasmine Ben Amara, in the role of Aziza), a brilliant screenplay. The tone with which the difficult story is tackled, besides, is particularly fascinating, through a use of humor veiled by a note of melancholy, which helps the international spectator in the difficult task of descending into the culture and the lives of the characters. A very enjoyable and pleasantly effective short film.
