#PFF17 • Panic attack!
Per quest’edizione, Birdmen è media-partner del Pentedattilo film Festival, il festival internazionale di cortometraggi che si svolge a Pentedattilo (Reggio Calabria) dal 7 all’11 dicembre. Ecco le nostre recensioni in anteprima. La Redazione, inoltre, assegnerà il Premio speciale Birdmen al miglior cortometraggio d’animazione e al miglior cortometraggio live action.

L’artista americana Eileen O’Meara, conosciuta per Agnes Escapes from the Nursing Home, suo debutto nel cinema di animazione, presentato al Sundance Film Festival nel 1988 e con alle spalle notevoli e rilevanti lavori tra cui i bumpers pubblicitari per MTV e Channel 1 e cortometraggi realizzati per importanti organizzazioni come UNICEF o l’emittente televisiva statunitense HBO, ha disegnato e diretto Panic Attack!, breve cortometraggio animato col quale vuole mostrare cosa accade nella mente di una donna durante un attacco di panico.
Completamente disegnato a mano, come tutti i lavori di O’Meara, le immagini accompagnano e concretizzano i pensieri e la voce della protagonista che, ferma in auto in attesa che il semaforo diventi verde, si pone una semplice domanda «did I leave the coffee on?» e in un attimo, in un improvviso vortice destabilizzante, arriva a mettere in dubbio qualsiasi aspetto e avvenimento della sua vita come, per esempio, chiedersi «am I pregnant with a devil-baby?». Panick Attack! esplora l’angoscia derivante dalla progressione dei pensieri associativi che, infettati dall’ansia, naufragano verso preoccupazioni sempre maggiori, da una normale dimenticanza a dubbi esistenziali, una spirale verso il basso, una caduta nell’abisso.
Questa esplorazione avviene con ironia sdrammatizzante attraverso un rovesciamento del solito, sono le immagini ad accompagnare il testo e non viceversa. Le immagini didascaliche seguono le frasi narrative, sono una associazione in continuità con la voce, non l’elemento fondante, sono simpatiche e ironiche, con fluidità si trasformano dubbio dopo dubbio, tra figure concrete e astratte, elaborate o stilizzate, piene di colori oppure in bianco e nero, a dare forma al flusso mentale.
Particolari i riferimenti alla cultura della religione cattolica, come ad indicarla origine, diretta o indiretta, dei sensi di colpa e delle ansie. Ben fatto e degno di menzione il lavoro sui suoni e il doppiaggio, tra ironia e angoscia, a cura di Tim Maloney.

For this edition, Birdmen is the media-partner of the Pentedattilo film Festival, the international short-film festival that will take place in Pentedattilo (Reggio Calabria) from 7th to 11th of December. Here is a preview of our reviews. Furthermore, we will assign a special Birdmen award to the best animation short-film and to the best live action short-film.

Eileen O’Meara is an American artist known for Agnes Escapes of Nursing Home, her animation debut presented at the Sundance Film Festival in 1988. In the past She has produced important and important works, such as the advertising bumpers for MTV and Channel 1 and short films for major organizations such as UNICEF or the USA TV channel HBO. She has designed and directed Panic Attack! an animated short film with which she wants to show what happens in a woman’s mind during a panic attack.
It’s completely hand drawn, like all O’Meara’s works. The images go with and realize the thoughts and the voice of the protagonist who, standing in the car waiting for the light to turn green, asks herself a simple question «did I leave the coffee on?» and in one quick moment, in a sudden destabilizing vortex, she begins to doubt any aspect and event of her life, for example, asking herself «am I pregnant with a devil-baby?». Panick Attack! explores the anguish deriving from the progression of associative thoughts which, infected by anxiety, are shipwrecked towards ever greater preoccupations, from a normal forgetfulness to existential doubts, a downward spiral, a fall into the abyss.
This exploration is made up with shameful irony with a reversal of the usual, the images go with the text and not the text with the image. The explanatory images follow the narrative phrases, they are an association in continuity with the voice, they are not the founding element, they are funny and ironic, they are transformed with fluidity, following the continuous doubts, the images move between concrete and abstract figures, elaborated or stylized, full of colors or in black and white, to shape the mental flow.
References to the culture of the Catholic religion are particular, as to indicate the direct or indirect origin of all feelings of guilt and anxiety. The work on sounds and dubbing edited by Tim Maloney, between irony and anguish, is well done and worth mentioning.
