Per quest’edizione, Birdmen è media-partner del Pentedattilo Film Festival, il festival internazionale di cortometraggi che si svolge a Pentedattilo (Reggio Calabria) dal 7 all’11 dicembre. Ecco le nostre recensioni in anteprima. La Redazione, inoltre assegnerà il Premio speciale Birdmen al miglior cortometraggio d’animazione e al miglior cortometraggio live action.

The glass pearl (Glaspärlan, 2017) del regista e sceneggiatore finlandese Tommi Seitajoki (Transport, Animal day, Into the night) è il ritratto crudo e tagliente di un’infanzia difficile. Il protagonista è Daniel (interpretato dal giovane Alvar af Schultén), un dodicenne come tanti che vive nei sobborghi di una grande città e trascorre i suoi pomeriggi giocando con gli amici fingendo di essere Groot, il simpatico personaggio del film Guardiani della Galassia. Parte del suo tempo però Daniel lo dedica a rovistare nei bidoni della spazzatura in cerca di qualcosa che possa fargli guadagnare una ricompensa per lui e per la sua famiglia. Non sempre però questa strana caccia al tesoro va a buon fine, costringendo il ragazzo a trovare altri modi per ottenere ciò che desidera.
Presentato quest’anno in anteprima mondiale al Göteborg Film Festival e visto anche durante lo scorso Giffoni Film Festival, The glass pearl è l’ultimo, interessante lavoro di un giovane autore di cortometraggi e documentari che può vantare la partecipazione in molti festival prestigiosi, dove ha ottenuto anche svariati riconoscimenti. Servendosi di un budget di 100.000 euro, Seitajoki filma la perdita dell’innocenza che si consuma in un contesto di estrema povertà e disagio sociale, in cui anche un bambino è costretto a rovistare nella spazzatura o persino rubare nei supermercati per procurarsi qualcosa da mangiare, seguendo le regole di un gioco tanto semplice quanto folle ideato dal padre. Proprio i genitori sono figure umiliate e disperate che non possono che restare in silenzio: difficile in questo senso rimanere indifferenti di fronte all’impietosa inquadratura della madre che assiste al ritorno a casa del figlio con il “bottino”, sospettando ciò che però non osa dire.
Seitajoki mette quindi in scena una breve storia dickensiana immergendola nel degrado che ancora oggi investe molte periferie del Nord Europa, toccando un tema che oggi più che mai non è estraneo al nostro Paese. Una piccola gemma che non mancherà di impreziosire questa edizione del Pentedattilo Film Festival.

The glass pearl (Glaspärlan, 2017), by Finnish director and screenwriter Tommi Seitajoki (Transport, Animal day, Into the night), is a sharp portrayal of troubled childhood. The protagonist is Daniel (played by Alvar af Schultén), an ordinary 12-year-old boy who lives in the suburb of a big city and spends his afternoons playing with his friends and fooling around pretending to be Groot, a funny carachter from the film Guardians of the Galaxy. Daniel devotes also part of his time to rummage through garbage bins, searching for something that might lead a reward for him as well as his family. However, when this peculiar treasure hunt fails he will have to find other ways to obtain what he wants.
Premiered this year at the Göteborg Film Festival and presented also at the last Giffoni Film Festival, The glass pearl is the latest work of a young author of short films and documentaries which were selected to several prestigious film festivals worldwide and received various awards. Drawing on a production budget of 100.000 Euros, Seitajoki films the loss of innocence which occurs in a context of extreme poverty and social unrest in which even a child has to dig through the garbage or steal in supermarkets in order to get something to eat, following the rules of a simple yet wicked game invented by his father. The parents themselves are desperate, humiliated figures who remain silent; it is very difficult for example to remain indifferent to the shot of Daniel’s mother standing silent as she waits for her son’s return, suspecting something that she does not dare to say.
What Seitajoky creates here is a sort of Dickensian short story immersed in the degradation which affects the suburbs in many parts of Northern Europe, thus touching on a issue that nowadays is topical also in Italy. The glass pearl is therefore a little gem which will surely embellish this edition of the Pentedattilo Film Festival.
