#PFF17 • The Elusive

Per quest’edizione, Birdmen è media-partner del Pentedattilo Film Festival, il festival internazionale di cortometraggi che si svolge a Pentedattilo (Reggio Calabria) dal 7 all’11 dicembre. Ecco le nostre recensioni in anteprima. La Redazione, inoltre assegnerà il Premio speciale Birdmen al miglior cortometraggio d’animazione e al miglior cortometraggio live action.

Ely Chevillot con The Elusive (Ce qui échappe in originale, 2016), suo corto di diploma allo IAD di Louvain-la-Neuve (nonché sua prima prova in assoluto dietro la macchina da presa), di cui firma anche la sceneggiatura, ci catapulta a passi leggeri in un inferno contemporaneo condito però da un forte retrogusto tipico del dramma borghese otto-novecentesco.

Catherine va a prendere suo figlio Clément in piscina. Un’azione come tante, la stessa di tante altre volte. Eppure si apre una feritoia, una crepa nella sua vita: Clément, dodici anni, ha molestato durante la doccia post-lezione una sua compagna di corso. Dapprima il fatto viene vissuto quasi con distacco da Catherine, che pensa di poterlo gestire tranquillamente in famiglia, non dandogli un peso eccessivo. Tenendo d’occhio però maggiormente il figlio, agli occhi della donna si spalanca poco a poco una tragedia familiare: suo figlio molesta anche il fratello minore, ha inoltre degli strani segni sul corpo che lasciano pensare a qualcosa di più di una semplice debolezza pre-adolescenziale. Suo marito, inoltre, non riesce ad affrontare l’argomento con Clément. Quando i suoi atroci presentimenti verranno confermati, l’equilibrio familiare sarà perso per sempre.

Brillante prova registica d’esordio per il giovane cineasta belga, il quale accompagna il suo spettatore per mano all’interno del dramma familiare narrato, lentamente e con una tenera delicatezza che lo esime da un qualunque giudizio morale nei confronti dei due protagonisti della storia, donando una forza espressiva al lavoro che esalta la realistica umanità della vicenda. Degne di nota le prove attoriali dei due interpreti principali, Lula Béry (Catherine) e Igor van Dessel (Clément), oltre alla fotografia, diretta da Juanita Onzaga, e alle musiche, composte da Thomas Engelen ed Ethan Rose. Interessante il ruolo attribuito all’elemento acquatico all’interno del corto, molto presente e fortemente simbolico.

Già selezionato in numerosissimi festival internazionali, The Elusive ha vinto diversi premi tra cui miglior cortometraggio, miglior regista, miglior attrice, migliore sceneggiatura, migliori musiche.

Ely Chevillot with The Elusive (Ce qui échappe, 2016), his diploma short movie at IAD of Louvain-la-Neuve (and also his first ever test behind the camera), of which he also wrote the screenplay, catapults the spectator in light steps in a contemporary hell seasoned, however, by a strong aftertaste typical of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries’ bourgeois drama.

Catherine goes to get her son Clément to the pool. An action like many others, the same as many other times. Suddendly a crack opens in her life: Clément, twelve years old, has molested during his post-lesson shower one of his classmate, Marion. At first the fact is lived by Catherine almost with detachment. She thinks she can manage the event safely sharing it with the family, not giving it too much importance. Keeping an eye on her son, however, in the life of the woman little by little opens a family tragedy: Clément harasses also his younger brother, besides he has queer signs on his own body that lead she to think of something more than a simple pre-adolescent fault happened. Her husband, moreover, doesn’t want to deal with the topic with Clément. When the atrocious premonitions of Catherine will be confirmed, the family will lost its balance forever.

The movie could be considered a brilliant directorial debut for the young Belgian filmmaker, who accompanies his spectator hand in hand through the family tragedy narrated, in a slow way and with a tender delicacy that exempts him from any moral judgment against the two protagonists of his story, giving an expressive force to the work that enhances the realistic humanity of the story itself. Noteworthy are the trial of the two main performers, Lula Béry (Catherine) and Igor van Dessel (Clément), as well as photography, directed by Juanita Onzaga, and music, composed by Thomas Engelen and Ethan Rose. Finally, the part of the aquatic element in the short, which is almost always present and strongly symbolic, results very interesting. Already selected in many other international festivals, The Elusive has won several awards including Best Short Film, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Screenplay, Best Music.
