Per quest’edizione, Birdmen è media-partner del Pentedattilo film Festival, il festival internazionale di cortometraggi che si svolge a Pentedattilo (Reggio Calabria) dal 7 all’11 dicembre. Ecco le nostre recensioni in anteprima. La Redazione, inoltre, assegnerà il Premio speciale Birdmen al miglior cortometraggio d’animazione e al miglior cortometraggio live action.

Catherine è una bambina che non si sente accettata dal mondo esterno, e per questo motivo si chiude in sé stessa con il suo amico più caro: Kitty, cioè il suo gatto. Crescerà come una gattara senza conoscere l’amicizia e l’amore? Il cortometraggio d’animazione di Britt Raes è una piccola favola formata da momenti comici, drammatici e leggermente macabri. Il black humour si sprigiona specialmente verso la fine del corto, anche se la regista ne ha voluto mettere all’inizio una piccola traccia per inserire meglio lo spettatore nella storia.
Le animazioni hanno un che di surreale e psichedelico, ovviamente pervaso dalla presenza felina, ma non lasciano molto spazio a diverse interpretazioni. È magnifico il modo in cui lo spettatore riesce a vedere il mondo con gli occhi della Catherine bambina e di quella adulta, notando che non è cambiato quasi nulla. Le trasformazioni delle persone in esseri zoomorfi esprimono tutta la bestialità e la cattiveria, presente anche nel nostro mondo, che a volte affrontiamo o dalla quale cerchiamo di rifugiarci chiudendoci in noi stessi come ha fatto Catherine.
Quale animale poteva fungere da nemesi ad un’amante dei gatti? Il cane ovviamente! Infatti ogni elemento che minaccia la protagonista, rappresentato quasi sempre da Wendy, è accompagnato o raffigurato con sembianze canine. Altra particolarità del cortometraggio è il modo in cui vengono rappresentate le scene più oniriche, la regista e i disegnatori hanno volutamente creato delle proporzioni inverosimili per focalizzare l’attenzione dello spettatore attorno a certi aspetti dell’inconscio di Catherine.
L’anima di questo racconto è nella fusione tra la storia inventata e l’esperienza personale della regista belga, il modo in cui è riuscita a esprimere tramite l’animazione una parte di sé, una fase della sua vita. Nei minuti finali del cortometraggio si vedrà come l’unico tipo di rapporto umano che lei riuscirà a portare avanti è legato in modo indissolubile alla morte e all’attaccamento al passato.
Quella di Catherine è una storia di insicurezza, angoscia e incredibile dolcezza; sono queste emozioni a mostrare il valore del cortometraggio d’animazione che riesce ad esprimersi in modo diretto e genuino.

Catherine is a child who does not feel accepted by the outside world, and for this reason she closes herself in herself with her dearest friend: Kitty, her cat. Will she grow up like a cat lady without knowing friendship and love? The animated short film by Britt Raes is a small fairy tale made up of comic, dramatic and slightly gruesome moments. The black humor is released especially towards the end of the short, even if the director has wanted to put at the beginning a little track to guide better the viewer in the story.
The animations have something surreal and psychedelic, obviously pervaded by the feline presence, but they don’t leave much space for different opinions. The way in which the spectator can see the world through the eyes of the child and the adult Catherine is magnificent, noting that almost nothing has changed. The transformations of people in zoomorphic beings express all the bestiality and malice present in our world, which we sometimes face or from which we try to take refuge by closing ourselves in ourselves as Catherine did.
Which animal could act as a nemesis to a lover of cats? Obviously, the dog! In fact, every element that threatens the protagonist, almost always represented by Wendy, is matched or depicted with canine features. Another peculiarity of the short film is the way in which the most dreamlike scenes are depicted, the director and the designers have deliberately created improbable proportions to focus the viewer’s attention on certain aspects of Catherine’s unconscious.
The soul of this story is in the fusion between the fiction and the personal experience of the Belgian director, the way in which she managed to express a part of herself through the animation, a phase of her life. In the final minutes of the short film we will see how the only type of human relationship that she will be able to carry forward is bound in an indissoluble way to death and attachment to the past.
Catherine’s story is about insecurity, anguish and incredible sweetness; these are the emotions that show the value of the animated short film that manages to express itself in a direct and genuine way.
