Per quest’edizione, Birdmen è media-partner del Pentedattilo film Festival, il festival internazionale di cortometraggi che si svolge a Pentedattilo (Reggio Calabria) dal 7 all’11 dicembre. Ecco le nostre recensioni in anteprima. La Redazione, inoltre, assegnerà il Premio speciale Birdmen al miglior cortometraggio d’animazione e al miglior cortometraggio live action.

Un dramma familiare, un tentativo costante di sostituzione. Belle ville è un cortometraggio notturno (pochissime le scene al sole e sempre governate da una certa oscurità): la regia e la scrittura di Jung Won-hee costringono ad un patto di incomprensione, una sorta di ambientale anonimato.
La protagonista progetta una fuga fin troppo dettagliata, fin troppo vincolata a tempi, luoghi, persone (a dei datori di lavoro non esattamente innocenti, di cui niente ci è dato sapere). Ignora quasi che l’agire umano sia infinitamente limitato.
Aveva già provato a tornate in Korea, più volte. Aveva sempre fallito, ma questa volta non l’avrebbe permesso: il figlio è in ospedale, sorvegliato dalla gemella (chiede al telefono al figlio: ricordi il mio volto? Come in una fermissima professione d’unicità, un tentativo perenne di sdoppiamento dalla controparte genetica). La sua fuga è fortemente legata al volere della sorella, che per un amore non vuole lasciare la Korea, non vuole prendere il posto di lavoro della protagonista. Un dramma familiare e personale di grande intensità emotiva.
Un focus non secondario – parlerei anzi di merito – è la denuncia sociale: critica al lavoro in nero, allo sfruttamento, al falso valore della globalizzazione, all’Europa e alle sue insufficienze economiche, all’illegalità con la quale coesiste. Ma soprattutto a quel mercato del lavoro orientale in Europa troppo spesso in secondo piano.
La regia e la fotografia di impianto classico tradiscono la volontà di concentrarsi sul narrato, il significato straborda, la forma è del tutto al suo servizio.

A family drama, a constant attempt to replace. Belle Ville is a nocturnal short film (few scenes are shot in the sunshine and, even if they are, they still maintain a certain degree of darkness): the writer and director Jung Won-hee requires a non-comprehension agreement, an environmental anonymity.
The protagonist plans an escape which is way too detailed, way too linked to moments, places and people (her employers, who look anything but innocent, but about whom we know utterly nothing). She is almost unaware of the fact that human possibilities are limited.
She has tried to go back to Korea already, more than once. She has always failed, but this time she wouldn’t let this happen: her son is in the hospital and is watched by his mother’s twin sister (the protagonist asks him on the phone: “do you remember my face?”, as in a firm profession of uniqueness, an attempt to separate herself from her genetic counterpart). Her escape is strongly linked to the will of her sister, who does not want to leave Korea and replace her sister on her workplace because of sentimental issues. An extremely emotionally intense family and personal drama.
An equally important feature – or rather merit – of this short film is the social denunciation: undeclared work, exploitation, fake globalization, Europe with its economical fallacies and its unlawfulness are all criticised. Most importantly, we also see criticism towards that oriental labor market which is often ignored in Europe.
Traditional direction and photography betray the will to focus on narration; meaning abounds, with form at its service.
